On December 5, 2023, the webinar on “Deleting third-party cookies: What do we do now?” took place in collaboration with Refinery89. instead of.

The following topics were discussed:

  • What will happen to cookies?
  • Do I still need a cookie banner?
  • What does the elimination of third-party cookies mean for websites?
  • What does the abolition of third-party cookies mean for the future?
  • Use of first-party data
  • Opportunities for website owners

Overview

One of the main topics discussed during the webinar was the future elimination of third-party cookies following Google’s recent updates. With the imminent phase-out of third-party cookies, advertisers and other industry players need to consider the impact on user tracking, targeting and delivery of personalized content. The webinar discussed the uncertainties for marketers and advertisers posed by the various scenarios, as well as possible alternatives they should consider.

The webinar also addressed the pressing question of whether websites still need cookie banners even without third-party cookies. The short answer is: Yes, websites will still need cookie banners because any form of data collection requires consent, regardless of whether websites switch from third-party cookies to first-party cookies or other solutions such as server-side tag management should.

Given the challenges posed by the end of third-party cookies, the webinar provided some valuable insights, such as using first-party data as a viable alternative.

The webinar concluded with a look at the opportunities available to website operators in the age of post-third-party cookies. From alternatives to tracking technologies to different approaches to data collection and analysis, actionable strategies for better cookie management and data protection compliance were presented.
