New Zealand updates privacy law to align with EU standards

New Zealand’s Privacy Amendment Act 2025 has introduced a new Information Privacy Principle 3A (IPP 3A), effective 1 May 2026, requiring organizations to inform individuals when their personal information is collected indirectly, such as from a third party. The new principle enhances transparency and accountability and brings New Zealand’s privacy framework into closer alignment with EU data protection standards, helping to improve the country’s EU adequacy status. Organizations operating in or targeting individuals in New Zealand are encouraged to adopt GDPR-level transparency and consent management measures ahead of the commencement date to ensure compliance readiness.

Political ads: New EU regulation requires explicit consent

Under Regulation (EU) 2024/900, explicit user consent is required for political advertising. This means, consent for personalized ads is no longer sufficient, and users must actively opt in to political advertising before any personal data is used for targeting. In our latest guide, we explain what this means for advertisers and publishers and show how to configure your consentmanager setup to stay compliant, including adding a new “Political Advertising” purpose and enabling explicit opt-in.

Massachusetts Data Privacy Act to take effect in 2027

The Massachusetts Senate has passed the Massachusetts Data Privacy Act (MDPA), which will come into effect in 2027. Inspired by the Maryland Online Data Privacy Act, the new law introduces strong protections for consumers and clearer rules for businesses. It limits how much personal data companies can collect, reinforces the principle of data minimization, and gives individuals the right to opt out of targeted advertising and data sales. As the effective date approaches, you will be able to activate MDPA compliance in your CMP dashboard under the “Legal” section, just as you can already do for other U.S. state privacy laws currently in effect.

ICO fines businesses +£500k for misuse of personal data

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined two companies a total of £550,000 for making unwanted marketing calls to individuals who had opted out of receiving them. An investigation found that the companies could not demonstrate valid consent. To remain compliant under the UK GDPR, organizations must be able to prove that consent was freely given and properly recorded. This can be achieved through implementing a proper consent banner and consent logs, which record key details including the date and time of a user’s visit and their consent or rejection status. Taking these steps not only strengthens regulatory compliance but also helps protect businesses from costly fines.Official statement by the UK’s ICO can be found here:
