The EDPB’s latest decision on ‘consent or pay’ models for online platforms
The recent decision by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) will affect the future of ‘consent or pay’ models on major online platforms such as Meta or Google. The decision follows a request from Dutch, Norwegian and German (Hamburg) regulators, which was largely influenced by Meta’s new subscription option, where users either pay a fee or consent to ads. In our detailed article, we explain why the EDPB considers these models to be potentially non-compliant with GDPR standards. We also discuss the EDPB’s recommendations for an alternative compliance method that could transform user consent mechanisms at no additional cost. For consentmanager customers, you can now find a direct implementation option within your CMP dashboard and update your consent banners.
