New features: Cookie wall & improved cross-domain consent
With this month’s update, we have devoted particular attention to the topic of third-party cookies. Even though Google has now backed down (see the next section), there are two browsers, Firefox and Safari, that no longer support third-party cookies. If you want to be on the safe side, two of our new features are particularly helpful:
Firstly, there is the Cookie Wall feature: If it is activated, new visitors are immediately redirected to a consent page and have to decide there. The advantage: Cross-domain consent is almost always possible – even for browsers that do not support third-party cookies. You can find out more about the Cookie Wall in our help section .
Secondly, we have added a useful extension: under Menu > CMPs > Legal Settings you can activate the “automatic consent synchronization on click-out”. If there is a link on website A that leads to website B and a visitor clicks on it, the link is automatically extended with the consent information. The visitor automatically takes his consent with him to the other website, so to speak. This reduces the need to constantly ask the visitor again.

Google postpones abolition of third-party cookies
In a press release dated July 22, 2024, Google announced that it would not implement the planned elimination of third-party cookies after all. After delaying the complete elimination for Chrome users for years, Google has decided on a new strategy. The company is now developing a new user experience on Chrome that allows users to make informed decisions about protecting their privacy that will take effect for their entire web browsing experience. These settings can be changed at any time.
Google is currently working with key regulators, including the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), to finalise this new approach. More details are expected to emerge in the coming weeks as these discussions progress and Google continues to refine its plans.
For the reasons stated above, consentmanager will continue to set third-party cookies under the consentmanager.net domain and will not implement the planned abolition of the Consent Scopes ( https://help. consentmanager .de/books/cmp/page/working-with-consent-scopes-cross-domain-consent ), including the account and CMP-specific settings.
Microsoft is liable for cookie consents: New ruling by the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt
In a recent ruling, the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt ruled that Microsoft is liable for storing cookies (on a third-party website) without the user’s express consent. Although Microsoft Advertising’s terms and conditions refer to the responsibility of the website operator, Microsoft remains obliged to prove that the end user’s consent was obtained.
